Botox® Basics: What You Need to Know About Injection Zones

Botox and Xeomin Treatments

Botox® is an easy and effective treatment for wrinkles (yes, please!). In fact, Botox is the most common nonsurgical aesthetic procedure in the world, with millions of treatments administered each year.

Botulinum toxin, also known as Botox, can be injected into various areas of the body to address a number of medical conditions. For example, Botox treatments in your jawline might help reduce the side effects of TMJ disorder.

Most commonly, Botox is injected into the face to reduce wrinkles.

In the sections below, we’ll help you level up your Botox knowledge with a brief discussion of the Botox injection zones—the parts of the face that benefit the most from Botox treatment. First, let’s step through a quick overview of how Botox works to reduce wrinkles and restore smooth, rejuvenated skin.

How Botox Injections Work

A Botox injection is a shot of Botulinum toxin. This substance blocks nerve signals that cause muscle contraction. Thanks to its muscle-relaxing effect, Botox can help with many conditions that involve muscle tension or nerve pain. For example, Botox is used to address issues like neck spasms, migraines, and eye twitches.

Most commonly, Botox is used to reduce wrinkles in the upper third region of the face. By reducing muscle contraction in areas like the forehead and around the eyes, Botox creates smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

What Are the Botox Injection Zones?

A Botox injection zone, or injection site, is a specific area on the face or body that benefits from Botox. While Botox can be used throughout the body to treat various conditions, the most commonly used injection zones are in the face.

The top three Botox injection sites are:

  • Forehead
  • Crow’s feet (outer eyes)
  • Between the eyebrows

For each injection zone, healthcare professionals use specific injection patterns designed to safely and effectively provide optimal results. This typically involves 3—5 injections per zone.

Botox for the Forehead Zone

The forehead is often the first facial area in which wrinkles appear. As early as their 20s, some people begin to notice long, horizontal lines forming across the forehead.

Botox injections in the forehead help the muscles in this area to relax. Wrinkle creases flatten out, creating a smoother, more youthful skin quality across the forehead.

Botox for the Crow’s Feet Zone

Lateral canthal lines, commonly known as crow’s feet, are the small wrinkles that appear on the outer corners of our eyes.

These horizontal creases typically first appear during smiling. The wrinkles are visible during the natural squinting and contracting that occurs when a face forms a smile. Eventually, crow’s feet become permanent fixtures. Meanwhile, the skin loses elasticity and begins to sag, resulting in deeper, more noticeable lines around the eyes.

Most people develop crow’s feet in their 30s or 40s. In men, these wrinkles tend to be deeper and appear earlier in life. This may be because men are less likely than women to protect their skin by wearing sunglasses and sunscreen. However, we all get crow’s feet eventually, regardless of our skincare routines.

After Botox injections in the crow’s feet zone, the muscles around the eyes are more relaxed and don’t contract as deeply during squinting and smiling. This helps to prevent new wrinkles from forming and smooths out existing wrinkles.

Botox for the Between-the-Eyebrows Zone

The area of skin above the nose and between the eyebrows is called the glabella. Wrinkles in this region appear as short vertical lines, thus their nickname: “the 11s.” These wrinkles are also known as frown lines.

Like crow’s feet, frown lines typically first appear only during certain facial expressions. Eventually, they become permanent wrinkles as the skin loses firmness and elasticity due to aging.

Fortunately, 11’s wrinkles respond wonderfully to Botox. After a few quick-and-easy injections, the skin between the eyebrows becomes beautifully ironed out and smooth.
