What Is a Laser Facial and How Does It Work?

what is a laser facial

A facial can incorporate all sorts of techniques and tools, from comforting aromatherapy to LED light therapy that zaps acne-causing bacteria. Some treatments are more useful than others. Some are performed mainly to enhance the relaxing spa experience, while others offer significant cosmetic results.

One of the most exciting and helpful facial treatments is laser skin resurfacing

How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works

Laser skin resurfacing is a sophisticated facial treatment.

A facial is a noninvasive skincare procedure that cleans, moisturizes, and exfoliates the face. Facials clean deep inside of pores, remove dead skin and debris and leave you looking and feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

Laser skin resurfacing uses a strong beam of light to remove damaged skin from the surface of the face. This promotes natural healing processes and leads to a cleaner, brighter, more youthful skin quality.

Laser Skin Resurfacing: The Treatment Process

To prepare for treatment, your laser skincare specialist will examine your skin to determine the treatment depth that will provide optimal results. If necessary, a topical anesthetic will be provided to numb the skin and prevent discomfort during the procedure. Typically, you’ll only feel a slight warming sensation during the treatment.

The treatment process can be extremely quick and can take anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes total. During that time, the specialist works over the skin with a handheld laser device. They direct a narrow, intense beam of light at the skin. When the light strikes the skin, it’s converted to heat. This allows the beam to destroy old skin cells. Meanwhile, the laser beam warms up underlying layers of skin. This heating process stimulates collagen production. The flow of collagen and other helpful proteins supports the emergence of healthy, rejuvenated skin.

Laser Skin Resurfacing: The Benefits

Laser skin resurfacing offers significant, lasting results. By removing old skin to a precise depth, laser resurfacing works with the body’s own healing processes to restore the skin’s natural youthful glow.

The benefits of multiple laser skin resurfacing treatments include:

  • Reduced appearance of acne scars and other blemishes
  • Reduction in pore size
  • Reduced hyperpigmentation and melasma (uneven skin tone issues)
  • Reduction in wrinkles
  • Smoother, brighter, more youthful skin

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

If you aren’t satisfied with traditional facials, then laser skin resurfacing is an option that provides a more thorough rejuvenation of the skin, with a more significant impact on overall skin quality.

You might choose laser skin resurfacing to address any combination of these cosmetic issues:

  • Birthmarks, acne scars, other scars, and warts
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Minor wrinkles
  • Dull or tired-looking skin

A laser facial isn’t recommended for pregnant women. It’s also not a good option if you currently have a significant amount of active acne.

Laser Facial Vs. Microneedling: Which One Is Better?

Laser skin resurfacing is one of the most advanced facial treatments. However, if lasers aren’t your thing, there are other options.

One appealing alternative to a laser facial is microneedling. This treatment involves puncturing the skin with very fine needles. This stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response, flooding the surface of the skin with restorative elastin and collagen. The punctures also create microchannels that allow topical treatments to more effectively penetrate deep within the pores.

Microneedling and laser skin resurfacing are both safe and effective treatments that stimulate the body’s own rejuvenating processes. Both treatments have broad benefits for the skin, including a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and scars and restoration of a youthful glow.

One advantage of microneedling is that it’s effective for people with a darker skin tone. Laser skin resurfacing is more helpful for lighter skin tones. Microneedling is also a lower-priced treatment. Laser skin resurfacing, on the other hand, may offer a more thorough removal of damaged skin. Results are also faster-acting and longer-lasting. Laser facials are also preferable for anyone who isn’t comfortable with needles.
